Education Courses

Art Shape's Education programme is funded by Adult Education in Gloucestershire, courses are free to anyone who is aged 19+, living in Gloucestershire and meet the eligibility criteria.

Create courses

Places are free for participants who consider themselves to have a disabling barrier. If you are interested in one of these courses but do not meet the criteria, a £30.00 contribution is required.

 

Steam Pirates on Parade
Thursdays at The Art Shape Studio
May 2nd - 16th
10am - 2pm
Come and join a creative group to design and construct amazing 3D structures as part of the parade for the forthcoming Tall ships Festival in Gloucester. Work closely with an artist to learn how to realise ideas from research and sketches to large scale impressive displays. Take inspiration from the Steampunk Victorian era interspersed with futuristic technology, to amalgamate a variety of materials and styles producing unique stylish visuals to be proud of.

 

Telling Stories Through Textiles
Mondays at Gloucester Resource Centre
June 3rd - July 8th
10am - 12pm
Would you like to try out creative textiles but don't know where to start? During this course you will be able to make a textile collage using fabrics, recycled clothing and basic stitching. You will learn how to use abstract colours and patterns to tell a story through your finished picture. The course is a relaxed and fun way to delve into textiles.

 

Wanted! Illustration 
Wednesdays at The Ed Shed, Folk Museum
May 1st - 22nd
10am - 1pm
The Pirates are coming, stealing our rum and causing general mayhem....the people of Gloucester must be warned! Join Thomas Brown (professional illustrator and possible pirate) to learn about pirate history and gain skills in storytelling, drawing and making. Create eye-catching 'Wanted' posters which will be posted all around the city as part of the Gloucester Steampunks Pirate festival and Tall Ships event.

 

First Steps courses

Places are free for participants who are below a full level 2 in their education and are looking to build confidence and to gain new skills. If you are interested in one of these courses but do not meet the criteria, a £30.00 contribution is required.

  

Grunge, Grime and Glitches
Tuesdays on Zoom
May 7th - June 18th
Celebrate the visual potential and beauty in imperfections by exploring a variety of mixed media techniques to achieve some gorgeous decayed and distressed outcomes using a selection of techniques and paints effects such as modelling paste, acrylic resists, vintage montage, digital glitch drawings and more.

Places are free for participants who are below a full level 2 in their education, and / or are unemployed or low waged (up to £20,319 per year). If you are interested in one of these courses but do not meet the criteria, a £50.00 contribution is required.

 

Steampunk on Show
Wednesdays at the Art Shape Studio

May 1st - May 22nd
10am - 3pm
Fancy getting ARRRty? In this course the steampunk adventure becomes airborne and you will have the opportunity to create a variety of ‘steampunked’ items to coincide with the ‘Tall Ships’ festival in Gloucester where you will be able to display your work in a shop window for all to see! Amongst others you will create a highly visual and authentic ‘Airship Pirate’ accessory. No experience needed as everything will be started from scratch.

 

Develop your own Writing
Thursdays at the Art Shape Studio

June 6th - July 25th
10am - 12.30pm

This course is intended for writers with any degree of experience, who have a work-in-progress, or an idea for writing a work of fiction they would like to realise. You might have finished the first draft of a novel, written an outline of a short story, or simply be plagued by a creative idea that won’t leave you alone! Each participant will essentially pursue their own project, but will be fed by the input of the tutor and other participants.

 

Illustrated Maps
Fridays on Google Classrooms

May 10th - June 27th 
Dive in and start exploring through illustration! On this course you will discover
different styles and materials, try out new techniques and begin to creatively map your local area. There will also be the opportunity to have your final illustration displayed as part of an exciting exhibition across Gloucestershire train stations.

Social Media Know How

Get to grips with social media on this relaxed introduction to the five most popular platforms. Discover ways to promote your work and build an online presence. Gain an understanding of all the basics of starting your account, posting your work and finding your community.

It is essential that you book your place on our courses. We aim to provide a learning environment that is safe and comfortable for our learners therefore each course has a set number of available spaces. Courses are popular so please book in advance to secure your place. Turning up on the day without booking may cause disappointment if the class is full. Also if there are any unforeseen changes that occur before the start of a course, learners that are booked on can be easily contacted and informed of those changes.
